Already, she seems a little spacey, someone prone to staring off into some great distance only she can see. In fact, you'd be hard pressed to identify one idea, scene or element in the picture that is not a cliche. Of course, it's completely unrealistically, but the whole idea is quite funny and unusual. Luc Besson's latest has Scarlett Johansson so pumped up with brain power she's in danger of going supersonic . This film has greatly polarized critics for its use of controversial concepts. Obviously It's not possible because you would have to break the laws of physics to even get near that point but it's still good to wonder. Like many films by Besson—"The Professional," "The Fifth Element," "The Messenger" and other high-octane shoot-'em-ups—"Lucy" starts out riveting but becomes less engaging as it goes along. There’s an audacity to Lucy… Perhaps if someone were to film dog poop with their 2009 cell phone and shake the phone excessively every other minute, then maybe that movie would deserve 1 star. I am a scientist and of course this movie gives me mixed feelings about its science. But immediately Lucy is caught up in a nightmarish deal where she is captured and turned into a drug mule for a new and powerful synthetic drug. Did the title get you here? 23, 2014. Lucy Movie Review. Imagine a stranger-in-a-strange-land revenge thriller about a wide-eyed Anglo bombshell (Scarlett Johansson) who gets kidnapped and abused in Taiwan by nasty, sweaty, shouting Korean gangsters and then escapes to seek justice. The characters were also a little bit boring in my opinion. Watched Apr 10, 2021. After a certain point in the movie everything becomes ridiculous, unrealistic and not enjoyable to watch. However, as it progressed the storyline became more and more fascinating. Awards I dont understand people who liked the movie a LOT comment here but gave 6/10 points :) This movie deserve more come on ! Any type of essay. What a great action flick! This film was brilliantly directed by the French Maestro. Starts off well, everything makes sense, everything is clever, logical and interesting. People say we use only 10% of our brains. We watched LUCY about on DVD February this year. | This movie is terrible, plain and simple. | Great science fiction, or whatever you call it. All these bad reviewers seem to be on the more intelligent end of the pole but isn't cognitive enough to realize they're NOT watching a documentary!!!! In fact, I expected a killer heroine who would beat her adversaries to pulp. The situation the main character found herself in had an array of extraordinary things to do and take advantage of but didn't. But with the ridiculous premise "what can we do if we acquire the 100% of functionality of our brain" the movie tries to be philosophical and ...fails miserably. . My husband and I often have different likes and opinions but our differences came together in appreciation of LUCY. I enjoyed this for the most-part. Then imagine this same movie starring, say, a lightning fast kick boxer who can knock a dozen opponents' teeth out before they can raise a single fist. Lucy: Ridiculous, incoherent but pretty entertaining . Lucy is a science fiction movie that combines profound existential questions with a bunch of action scenes involving Asian gangsters. Calling this a sci-fi is a stretch. I absolutely enjoyed the Science Fiction aspects and seeing Lucy developing her powers was just pure gold. Well, maybe it's just because I expected to be disappointed, but I was pleasantly surprised. A well renowned professor who may be able to help her. A fantasy about unlocking 100 percent of the brain's potential that expects viewers to be using just 2 or 3 percent of their own gray matter, Luc Besson 's Lucy … If the girl also happens to be hot, then it's even better. Call me a killjoy, but I find it hard to accept movies that are based on an utterly anti-scientific premise. July 24, 2014 2:40PM ET Lucy By. That's Luc Besson's "Lucy," a thriller about an American woman who gets kidnapped into service as a drug mule bearing an experimental synthetic hormone, accidentally absorbs some of it, then sheds her physical, intellectual and perceptual limitations. Facebook; Twitter; LinkedIn; Pinterest; To say Luc Besson, whose latest film, Lucy, starring Scarlett Johansson has just come out, is a busy man is quite the understatement. The movie opens with Lucy Cola (Natalie Portman), yes, quite literally in the sky in mid-mission. Pssst… we can write an original essay just for you. The idea behind the movie was good, execution was not. One review on this app the person said that they hadn't seen the movie, but gave it one star because people use 100% of their brains. The foreshadowing in this movie is done greatly and as well as suspense. Any subject. Heck, I'd have settled for more than the two that Besson deigns to give us: "Oh, my God, these guys want to kill me" and "I am God, watch me kill these guys." Film Review. Understand that the writers didn't even go there for their information and didn't even bother to read Wikipedia on this concept and you now know how weak this is. I haven’t seen Limitless, but from what I understand about it, Lucy takes quite a different direction. You've seen a lot of the individual situations and filmmaking techniques in "Lucy" as well. whose theoretical studies of the human brain's untapped potential make him an information source and then finally a kind of partner-savior to Lucy; the handsome nice-guy Parisian cop (Amr Waked) who assists Lucy during her climactic mission to acquire more of the experimental hormone to ingest and become whatever it is that she's becoming: a 1950s sci-fi monster, probably—the kind that cannot be killed because everything you shoot at it makes it stronger and hungrier. This leitmotiv was quite smartly picked to raise interest, although scientifically inaccurate. After the many scathing reviews, I went to this film with very mixed feelings. After becoming an unwilling drug mule Lucy is suddenly able to access the full potential of the human brain when a surgically implanted packet of a new street drug ruptures inside her. The momentum in combination with the 90 minute runtime, kept myself entertained for the entirety. The 10% is nonsense that you can debunk on Snopes. Ele | April 8, 2016 | New Movies | No Comments. Cast and Crew Lucy is directed by Luc Besson and stars Scarlett Johansson, Morgan Freeman, Analeigh Tipton. Remember Altered States and all the philosophical claptrap they put forth as plot and dialog? I personally enjoyed every bit of the movie and, as it took me to a journey into the far far future, where humans can overcome their humanity and become real Gods. Johannson's mid-career transformation from husky-voiced ingenue to intensely physical matinee idol is one of the more fascinating arcs in American cinema. The purpose of humans? Get your price. We’ll even meet a 3-hour deadline. Movies Scarlett Johansson for new Luc Besson sci-fi movie April 26, 2013 | By Simon Brew. Scarlett Johansson proves beyond a doubt that she is able to carry the lead actress role in this sci-fi action flick. I want to thank you for a thousand kisses that I can feel on my face.". Print. The climax is probably the most contentious and unfavourable issue, but I appreciate the intent of Luc Besson's vision. Review: Lucy is deceived by her shady boyfriend, who coerces her into undertaking a delivery job. Its more of a mindless action movie. A spectacular film- visually stunning - very through provoking, Unusual, interesting and highly entertaining. This movie is fantastically cool. Rated R I don't mind movies where the girl kicks ass, even when it is entirely unrealistic. The heroine starts speaking in monotone and tilting her head at looming men like a quizzical bird regarding a worm that it's about to devour. Hard to swallow, even for the spiritually open-minded, If you're prepared to suspend disbelief (a lot of it) this is a great action/sci-fi movie. The antithesis of what the movie purports. It's different, it's interesting and its extremely entertaining. This is important. The story line is artificially cooked up to suit the action, effects are so-so (for this day and age) . So if you don't break into tears because the movie operates on ridiculous scientific premises, watch it and have fun. Lucy review – Luc Besson's cerebral sci-fi is set to overload. I usually don't like the typical shoot- them-up or speculative-futuristic or robotic movies, they turn me off because they are predictable and way over the deep-end of ridiculousness in their violence, special effects, contradictions and same-old-same-old tin spaceships, weaponry galore, and silly story; like the script and story were just thrown together for the sake of selling something at the box office or TV. The camera work and narrative ambiance starts off marvelously. Movie Review: Lucy, a Thrilling Science Misinterpretation. Now imagine this same movie injected with a dose of apocalyptic science fiction, with the woman gaining strange powers as the story unfolds. Here we have Scarlett Johansson, one of the hottest women of all time, looks promising right? User Ratings Maybe. It is based on facts about % that mankind can use his brain. Hadn't they seen the trailers? The Terminator is a great movie monster, but there's a reason why it's a supporting character in the films that bear its name. From the minute that Johansson's title character suffers a beating in captivity that ruptures the drugs in her stomach and releases them into her bloodstream (a Yankee nightmare), the film enters a realm of continual delight, though not always surprise. Why?!! It's only her control over her body, voice and eyes—and maybe our awareness that her performances in this movie, "Her" and "Under the Skin" are all of a piece; Lucy even uses the phrase "under the skin" at one point!—that stops "Lucy" from being tiresome. Luc Besson.. By DAVID BLAUSTEIN. Her work keeps us from realizing that Besson's script has botched the chance to tell a deeper story, one that's not just bombastically exciting and superficially clever, but quietly tragic. At the beginning, I thought that perhaps it wasn't going to be my cup of tea. It amazes me how many negative reviews this movie has gotten when its core, its message, is so giant. However this film excites the mind of those who REALLY know physics and know how few limits there are in what we can achieve in pushing our evolution through science to become indistinguishable from magic. Film Review: ‘Lucy’ Scarlett Johansson and writer-director Luc Besson make an effective duo in this agreeably goofy sci-fi thriller. It was supposed to be a simple job. Review by Lucy Patron. Morgan, you've fallen a looong way since Shawshank. The fun part is: What if it was true? Obviously the main purpose of Luc Besson with this was initially to please the audience. Lucy is little more than a type herself—a representative of humanity in its un-mutated, non-super state. This is worse. Fair enough, this film starts from the premise that humans only use 10% of their brains and Lucy can break this barrier and reach a whole new level in human evolution. Because of the bad reviews I didn't expect anything at all. Good. I analyzed this movie for my film study class. Enthusiastic and silly, Lucy powers through the movie's logic gaps with cheesy thrills plus Scarlett Johansson's charm -- and mostly succeeds at it. Lucy grossed $126.7 million in North America and $336.7 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $463.4 million, against a budget of $40 million. for strong violence, disturbing images, and sexuality, Breaking Bread on the 25th Anniversary of Big Night, ABC’s Rebel Wastes Talent on Fictional Version of the Erin Brockovich Legacy. It starts out as a fun action movie set in Taiwan. Parents need to know that Lucy is a sci-fi/action movie starring Scarlett Johansson. Fun from start to finish, with exactly the right amount of pseude science woven into it. The scene is shot mostly in tight closeup. Scarlett Johansson gets smarter as the movie gets dumber. Lucy Movie Review and Neuro Fact Check The premise for the movie Lucy is that 90% of human cerebral capacity goes unused, but that’s only the start of the neuroscience bloopers in this new film. It's far from perfect, but it's entertaining. Movies Lucy review July 24, 2014 | … First the premise that we only 10% of our brains is BS. Even the special effects are bad, low grade CG. Read Lucy reviews from parents on Common Sense Media. That scene is so brazenly powerful that in retrospect it made me wish the main character had gone on a journey with more emotional gradations. Share. July 25, 2014 heavymetalebert 1 Comment. "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." Some of the effects were of course slightly questionable... but I cannot really complain because the overall brilliance of this film outshone any negatives I could detect. One is an early scene of her being terrorized and abused by Taiwanese drug thugs: Lucy's abject helplessness here is hard to watch. It was a moment of utter spontaneity when I decided to purchase a ticket to see 'Lucy', and wow - I am certainly glad I did. However, the rest of the crew has work to do, and the audience has a movie to see. Metacritic Reviews. Its just, well, cool. An original take on the superhero movie; silly perhaps – but great fun, That one guy who told everyone to **** themselves. All Lucy had to do was deliver a mysterious briefcase to Mr. Jang. Lucy took the drugs, Luc Besson got high... Really good action, with a surprisingly thorough take on philosophy. Disappointing movie towards the end. Worth a watch if you like the genre. Shut up and watch it :)). . I certainly didn't expect serious Sci-Fi – after all, I had seen the trailers – but I actually wasn't quite sure what to expect (and I'm not sure I would have gone to see it at all, If it hadn't been directed by Luc Besson). It's full of itself, yet it still keeps winking at you. Lucy is little more than a type herself—a representative of humanity in its un-mutated, non-super state. Still, it represents the return of Luc Besson to his baroque and risky approach to genre filmmaking. Lucy (Scarlett Johansson) is an American student living a riotous life in Taipei. Don't waste your time on this spew. I am able to watch a fiction movie, am I not? In my opinion this film had the perfect balance of realism and sci-fi. Lucy is not a game-changing science fiction movie. | @petertravers Follow Peter Travers's Most Recent Stories ‘Tenet’ Review… Johannson's mid-career transformation from husky-voiced ingenue to intensely physical matinee idol is one of the more fascinating arcs in American cinema. Beautifully acted, by Scarlotte Johansson. No movie deserves 1 star. It too often falls back on gunplay and gore just when you think it might finally delve into the notions that it keeps serving up with such fanfare (the falseness of the idea of uniqueness; the self-defeating nature of a species "more concerned with having than being"; time as "the one true unit of measure"). I haven't been this entertained in 90 minutes since Pan's Labyrinth. A film like this reminds me of how starved some of us are for films of this sort. They question if certain concepts are accurate, and if particular scenarios can actually happen. Then envision midnight-movie touches mixed into the filmmaking: flash cuts of predators and prey enhancing otherwise typical scenes of plans being hatched; monologues about brain capacity and the true meaning of time coupled with psychedelic visions and wormholes and explanatory objects materializing from thin air. Marc Mohan Jul 25, 2014. The other occurs deeper in the story when Lucy realizes she's about to embark on a terrifying and probably one-way transformative journey and phones her mom. While this dichotomy wasn’t well-received by critics, there is an esoteric message hiding behind it all. But around twenty minutes into the movie everything starts falling apart as relentless and repetitive force-feeding of pseudo-scientific and underdeveloped philosophical gibberish is applied in a sad attempt to legitimize the developing story line. 08/04/2014 04:09 pm ET Updated Dec 06, 2017 As a rocket scientist and mathematician, my friends and university students continuously ask me about my thoughts on the science in today's blockbuster movies.
